First District Communities - Smithfield

The Town of Smithfield was originally set off from Providence and chartered in 1730. Settled predominantly by Quakers, its earliest industry was textiles. Several mills grew up along the many streams that ran through the Town. Agriculture, too contributed to Smithfield's early economy and today Smithfield is still referred to as Rhode Island's "Apple Country."

In addition to a solid industrial base, Smithfield is also the home of the nationally known business school, Bryant College, located on the beautiful 387-acre Tupper Campus. Founded in 1863, the College draws students from all over the world, preparing them for careers in business, industry and government.
