First District Communities - Pawtucket
Founded in 1671 at the strategically located juncture of the Blackstone River and the upper tidewaters of Narragansett Bay, Pawtucket is a city with a special place in the industrial history of the United States. It was in this City at the historic Slater Mill site that Sammuel Slater successfully constructed and operated machines for spinning cotton yarn in 1793. A number of machinery and iron working shops grew up alongside the textile factories and as the industrial development of Pawtucket continued to expand during the next century, so did the diversity of its manufacturing facilities. Although textiles are no longer the main product made here, a number of specialty textile operations still remain producing such commodities as lace, non-woven and elastic woven materials. Pawtucket now has 300 diversified industries, the three largest being jewelry and silverware, metals, and textiles. Over the last 20 years, City development policies have been targeted to improve the quality of residential life as well as expand employment opportunities.
