First District Communities - North Smithfield
Incorporated in 1871, North Smithfield was at first named "Slater," and sixteen days later had its name changed to North Smithfield. The town was home to a rural-agrarian society in the beginning but with the advent of organized industry, its villages began to develop around the rivers which powered their mills.
Today the farmers and millwrights have been replaced by many diverse occupations. The forest and farmland have been reconfigured into residential, industrial, commercial and recreational use, and although the Town has assumed a suburban character, it has not lost its early charm.
