First District Communities - Newport
Newport is widely considered a gem of the New England coastline. Established in 1639 by William Coddington and Nicholas Easton, Newport began with a group made up mostly of Baptists whom believed in the separation of church and state. They made the town one of the first secular democracies in the world. In the 1760’s, Newport became one of the five leading ports in North America competing with Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Charleston. After WWII, Newport became known as a summer playground for the rich. However, it is largely a middle class city filled with extraordinary Rhode Islanders.
Today, Newport has a lot to offer for visitors. Newport is a wonderful place for a weekend getaway. With beautiful beaches, amazing architecture, tours of Newport’s three vineyards and tours of the historic mansions, Newport has something for everyone.
