First District Communities - Lincoln
In 1871, the town of Lincoln was set off from Smithfield and incorporated as an independent Rhode Island town. Preserved in this rural setting are the homes of some of Rhode Island's first settlers, still standing here along with the remains of several small-scale industrialized structures. The town was first settled in 1650 and at one time included the City of Central Falls. Along "The Great Road" (Route 123) which extends between the villages of Saylesville and Limerock, and following along the Moshassuck River, there is a .6 mile stretch containing a series of early structures dating from the 17th to the 19th centuries which remain largely undisturbed to this day. There are historical walking tours along the Blackstone River Canal.
Currently, manufacturing is the principal source of local income here. Jewelry, silverware, and primary metals are the leading manufacturing groups, but in recent years a variety of newer industries have settled in Lincoln.
