First District Communities - Cumberland
The Town of Cumberland was one of five early New England towns received from Massachusetts by Royal Decree. It was first known as "Attleboro Gore" until 1746 when it was incorporated and named after British nobleman, William, the Duke of Cumberland.
The Town's early industrial growth centered around the abundant waterpower of the Blackstone and Abbot Run Rivers. Minerals such as iron and copper were also once mined in Cumberland and several original mine shafts over a hundred years old are still visible, although mineral deposits are no longer commercially mined. Today, manufacturing and retail trade are the largest sources of income here. The continued industrial and commercial growth has contributed greatly to Cumberland's tax base. The Town still retains much of its early rural charm and country atmosphere.
